If I put Harry McEvoy’s knife throwing video, Knife and Tomahawk Throwing for Backyard Recreation, on one end of the throwing knife video spectrum and David Adamovich’s knife throwing video, The Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing with an introduction to the Impalement Arts at the other end of the spectrum, then I would put Michael Pearl’s knife throwing video, Knife and Tomahawk Throwing for Fun in the middle, leaning a little closer to The Great Throwdini’s video.

DVD: Knife and Tomahawk Throwing For Fun by Michael Pearl

Knife and Tomahawk Throwing for Fun isn’t quite as technical as The Great Throwdini’s video but it will teach you a lot. He goes over the steps of knife throwing and breaks them down much more thoroughly than Harry K. McEvoy does. I liked how Michael used a nylon strap on the ground that he painted into a measuring device stretching out in front of his targets so he could always find his mark. I think this is an excellent device for newbies and I wonder where you get a strap like that.

Michael goes into more depth with Tomahawks than most other knife throwing videos I’ve watched so far. He shows you how the length of the handle makes a big difference in your throwing. He makes sure you know why a tomahawk head has to not be fastened to the handle (because it will break the handle on a bad throw instead of just coming apart) and many other tips. He has a very nice collection of hawks he shows you.

Then there is just some fooling around. He does lots of trick throws from behind the back and between his legs. He even throws a little camp shovel to show that you can have fun with just about anything that will stick. I like that he showed his family and used them to demonstrate what a throwing knife lesson really looks like. He even has some really young boys throw some knives…and they start sticking them right away. It is fascinating and heart-warming.

Then there are the dangerous stunts.

Well, I’ll let you buy the DVD and watch those dangerous stunts yourself. All I’m saying is “catch a throwing knife out of the air!” ‘Nuff said.

From the Back Cover:

Have you ever wondered how professional knife throwers got so good? Yes, it takes practice, but more importantly, it takes the right technique. Renowned knife throwing expert and tomahawk champion tells all. In this step-by-step, clear and easy to understand instructional video there is also a healthy dose of entertainment and showmanship to make this fun for the whole family to watch.

In his video, Knife and Tomahawk Throwing Harry McEvoy gives a very nice overview of the backyard sport of knife throwing. It was great to get to see him in his later years talking about the subject he loves, reminding me that he made me love knife throwing too.

<img src="http://www.trubalthrowingknifesociety.com/wp-content/uploads/dvd-knife-tomahawk-throwing-backyard-recreation-287x420.jpg" alt="Knife and Tomahawk Throwing for Backyard Recreation by Harry K.
This video, while instructional, is not as in-depth as others that are available. He skims the surface of the sport, showing the basics. If you are looking for a “how-to” video then get the one by The Great Throwdini. No, this video is for those of us who are fans of Harry K. McEvoy and Tru-Bal Throwing knives.

We get to see some rare old Tru-Bal models that Harry brings out to play with on a sunny Sunday afternoon. That’s how the video feels to me. The family (though not seen) is out on the property for a picnic and they all enjoy a good throw at an old dead tree.

The target he used in this video was very interesting to me. They took a tree that had about a 24″ diameter, cut it off at about six feet from the ground and then sliced it vertically down the center to about two feet off the ground. That left a nice flat face with vertical grain to throw at. If I ever own some property and a tree that size dies then that’ what I’m going to do.

This video only comes in VHS format as far as I know. I had to drag out my VHS player which thankfully I still had and hook it up to my computer to watch it. If anyone knows where to get a DVD copy, let me know. If you are a true, true Tru-Bal fan and want a copy of this video let me know, it will take some time and be very expensive, but I know where I can order a copy for you.

P.S.: I guess I missed it when they showed this on MTV! ;-D

From the VHS Jacket:

After making more than 30,00 Knives by hand and sixty years of Knife Throwing, internationally acclaimed Harry “Mac the Knife” McEvoy shows the secrets and tricks of throwing that only the pros know in Knife and Tomahawk Throwing for Backyard Recreation. Featured recently on MTV, McEvoy is recognized as the “Knife Throwing King of America” and “Father of Modern Knife Throwing”. He has authored ten books on the subject, one of which has sold over 90,000 copies. Friend and associate of some of the greatest Knife makers and masters of the twentieth century, he is the Founder of the American Knife Throwers Alliance. Knife and Tomahawk Throwing is not just a great Recreation for sportsmen and women; it is part of the history of America.

Harry McEvoy is a Fighting Illini, class of 1933, World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a member of The Prestigious Company of Military Historians and a Black Belt with the North Georgia China Hand Society. He resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I built a target in my back yard a few weeks ago and started throwing knives again after 25 years off. Boy was I surprised at how few times I could stick the knife. It’s a lot harder than it looks…and it’s harder than I remembered. I went through my books and re-read all of the material but I wasn’t getting much better. So I decided to check out a few videos and see if I could find one that would help me.

The Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing with an Introduction to the Impalement Arts

I finally found The Great Throwdini!

David Adamovich has created a video called The Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing with an Introduction to the Impalement Arts.

That’s quite a mouthful, but its appropriate considering how in-depth his video is. No information is withheld. All the insider’s secrets are revealed for the very first time, he says.

He really does break it down. The information comes in five parts.

PART 1 : Throwing Knives and Target Construction

Throwdini has a very nice collection of throwing knives, including an early Tru-Bal throwing knife that he shows off in the video. One trick knife that is incredible looks like a customized Tru-Bal Bowie-Axe (but it could be something else) that fires a blank round when it hits the target. That was particularly cool.

PART 2 : Grip, Stance, Wind-up, Release and Follow Through as seen from 5 different views in slow motion and frame by frame analysis

This is the meat-and-potatoes of what makes this the best video if you really want to learn how to throw like a pro as quickly as you can. Avoid having to unlearn bad form by learning good form as early as you can.

PART 3 : WFKT, AKTA and IKTA Competition format throwing with sample knife and hawk throws.

I always wondered at the various rules and targets that the different organizations use for their competition and he teaches you all of them in this part of the video.

PART 4 : Stunt throwing with a LaCross Axe showing 13 different ways to throw within a 6 foot area.

I tried to find a LaCross Axe for sale on the internet and I couldn’t, but David Adamovich sure makes it look fun to throw.

PART 5 : Impalement Arts (throwing around a human assistant) featuring balloon breaking, backhand, underhand and throwing while blind folded

When you see this part of the video which includes footage of several of his performances you realize why Throwdini is qualified to make this video. I cannot see myself ever throwing at (or next to) a live target but it is a lot of fun to watch him do it.

Actually, that is not what impressed me the most about this video and I have to tell you what was the most impressive to me. I’m not sure why, but he films his instruction in a marina on a pier. He placed his targets at the edge of the dock by the water. Some of his targets are 4′x6′ boards for sure, but others are just a 20″ log on a tripod. Let this sink in. If he misses one throw his knives go in the water!…and he is not throwing from only 8 or 10 feet away…he is doing two and three spins! (Watch the video sample on this page to see what I mean.)
